English levels to follow the formations

We, the Animation Formation and Free Education (AFFE) Network, we'll teach only in English from the 2023-2024 school year. It means that there will be no more French translations from this school year. We'll verify that each student has the required English level to follow our professional trainings without any problems. Why do we decided to delete the French translations for our formations? Firstly, English is the most important language in Informatic Technologies (IT) with the highest percentage of content on the internet written in English. Our students must be able to access to online library on different programming languages as well as the latest research articles. They must be capable of feeding the databases, writing reports usable by the professionals in this sector. Secondly, translating from one language to another is a waste of time because we lost time translating litterally. However, each language has its thinking system, grammar and vocabulary without forgetting its own fixed or idomatic expressions. Thirdly, what is missing in learning a language in France, it's the contextualized oral practice especially in daily situations. In fact, when we learn a language, we must juggle between linguistic (lexicon, phonetics, syntax), sociolinguistic (social standards, language registers, rules of politeness, regulation of relations between generations, social status, cultural groups) and pragmatism (public speaking, written correspondence, speeches, informal discussions, small talks). The language communication competence of the learner and communicator is implemented in the realization of various language activities that can be related to reception, production, interaction, mediation, each of these modes of activity being likely to be accomplished either orally, or in writing, or in speaking and writing. In short, when we learn a language, we must learn on one side, the language mechanics and the other, the sociocultural representations associated with it. At the beginning of our foreign language learning, we separate reception and production. Then, little by little, as we make progress, we are moving towards interaction, translation and interpretation. Skipping the French translations in our formations, we put directly our students in the big bath of English.

 

The Common European Framework of References (CEFR) is a classification that allows to evaluate our level of proficiency in a foreign languiage: A1 (Breakthrough level), A2 (Waystage level), B1 (Threshold level), B2 (Vantage level), C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency level) and C2 (Mastery level). The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) provides a common basis for the development of modern language programs examinations, textbooks, etc. in Europe. It describes as fully as possible what learners of a language need to learn in order to use it. It describes as fully as possible what learners of a language need to learn in order to use it for communication purposes; it also lists the knowledge and skills they need to acquire in order to behave effectively in the language. The description also includes the cultural context that supports the language. Finally, the CEFR framework defines levels of proficiency that measure learner progress at each stage of learning and at any point in life. It's designed to overcome the communication difficulties encountered by language professionals by modern language professionals and which stem from the difference between the educational systems.
