Information Media Education (IME) Workshops

The Information Media Education (IME) workshops are well practiced as we have been doing them every year since 2017. They are done within the framework of the new college and high school referentials and they count towards the Informatic Certificate 1 and 2 since the circular of 24-1-2022. Important clarification of Informatic Certificate 1 and 2 as well as the level 1 of the Computer Certificate are replaced by the PIX since 2019. The workshops as we do them have no impact on the College Certificate and High School Diploma. For adults, they can be adapted to fit the Répertoire National des Compétences Professionnelles (RNCP30134). They can be modified for events such as Internet Safer Day organized by Internet Sans Crainte, Women's Day on March 8, Maker Faire/Make Me events.

Here is the reference text from the French Ministry of Education: "The evolution of society is marked by the increase and acceleration of information flows, and by an easier access to information from a very large diversity of actors, notably from identified or anonymous individuals. Students are thus confronted with a flow of information that is unprecedented in its quantity, the diversity of its sources and the multiplicity of its media. This evolution renews and reinforces the need to educate students by awakening their intellectual curiosity, developing their capacity for analysis and discernment, teaching them to distinguish between facts and their interpretations and, more generally, to inform themselves and analyze before judging. This is why Media and Information Literacy (MIL), which is at the heart of the training of future free and enlightened citizens, is a component of the actions related to the values of the Republic and must be reinforced. This reinforcement responds to an expectation of the educational community, which was strongly expressed during the "Etats généraux du numérique pour l'éducation" (General Assembly on Digital Education) through proposal n°12 "Develop digital citizenship and reinforce media and information literacy by relying on the Centre de Liaison d'Éducation aux Médias de l'Information (CLÉMI)".

IME is one of the 21st century competencies (critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration) identified by the European Commission and international organizations (OECD, UNICEF, Council of Europe).

As such, it allows for the development of cross-cutting skills, including:

-demonstrating critical thinking, discernment (distinguishing a fact from an opinion/belief, contextualizing and evaluating information, knowing how to verify and cross-reference sources of information);

-the ability to express oneself orally or in writing (persuade and convince, express a point of view);

-demonstrate creativity and innovation (create and animate a school media by showing curiosity and open-mindedness);

-knowing how to collaborate (and what team spirit implies in terms of socio-behavioral skills: respect for others, trust, empathy, etc.);

-to engage (especially through school media) and develop a capacity to act.

These are 2-hours workshops in French and in English (Week of the Press and Medias in Schools, Safer Internet Day, Day against harassment in schools) in class with an external speaker specialized in the media for secondary schools in North of Tours/South of Tours that last from half-morning to one week. We start with the creation of a written or video production. These are workshops where we start from a series of videos "Vinz et Lou", "Les Clés des Médias", "C'est pas Sorcier". The theme is different each year and it echoes current events. The latters are designed for a class of 30 students at time and require only standard office equipment.

On the fairs, they are quarter-hour workshops and all day long with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 15 people. They are perfect for an association party. Often, they are SID workshops. The themes are different depending on the event but here are some of the topics covered:

-Defending Freedom of Expression 2 years after Charlie Hebdo (2017);

-Internet at the service of science and knowledge (2018);

-Getting informed to understand the world (30 years of the Semaine de la Presse et des Médias à l'École 2019);

-Informing ourselves in times of pandemic (2020);

-Information without borders (2021);

-Screens, networks and teenagers (2022);

-Information on all fronts (20 years of Internet Safer Day 2023).

Here is the evaluation grid we use for the skills of our workshops. These workshops are not graded.

This grid is inspired by the one used by the Centre Expérimental Pédagogique de Marennes Oléron (CEPMO) for the common core of human sciences. In 2004, the French Ministry of Education defined five domains with different objectives for the three levels of the B2I which is now the PIX.
