National Day against harassment in schools

The National Day against harassment is organized every year in November. It is an opportunity to remind people that prevention and the fight against harassment are fundamental to enable students to have a fulfilling schooling in the context of the priority given to well-being. Throughout the school years, nearly one student in ten is a victim of harassment, in various forms and degrees. The National Day against harassment helps mobilize the community and raise awareness. It is an opportunity for school communities and their various partners to organize events in schools, colleges and high schools, or more broadly at the local level: conferences, exhibitions, role-playing games, cooperation workshops, and book presentations in the library. This day is one of the highlights of the anti-harassment program, PHARE, deployed this year in all elementary and middle schools. It was the Minister of National Education at the time, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem (in office from 2014 to 2017) who initiated this day. Established in 2015, this day sadly remains relevant. After a two-year experimental phase in six academies, the pHARe anti-harassment program has been extended to all academies. It is mandatory in all middle schools and elementary schools since the beginning of the 2022 school year.

Harassment is defined as repeated violence that can be verbal, physical or psychological. This type of violence can also be found in the school: it is committed by one or more students against a victim who cannot defend himself or herself. When a child or teenager is insulted, threatened, beaten, pushed around or receives abusive messages repeatedly, it is called harassment. In fourth and fifth grade, 2.6% of students experience high levels of multi-victimization that can be likened to bullying (survey DEPP 2021); in college, 5.6% of students are victims (survey DEPP 2017) and in high school, 1,3% (survey DEPP 2018). With the constant use of new communication technologies (telephones, digital social networks), harassment between students continues outside the school premises. This is called cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is defined as "an aggressive, intentional act perpetrated by an individual or a group of individuals using electronic forms of communication, repeatedly against a victim who cannot easily defend himself or herself". Cyber-bullying is practiced via cell phones, instant messaging, forums, chats, online games, emails, social networks, photo sharing sites, etc. The banning of cell phones in schools and colleges, combined with student awareness of digital uses and risks, is an essential element in the fight against harassment.

The fight against harassment also relies on the commitment of students. Today, we have 22900 student ambassadors and 10000 ambassadors by 2020, trained to identify harassment situations, capable of acting as an alert and thus avoiding leaving student victims isolated. These student ambassadors are also mobilized to raise awareness among their peers, particularly on No to Bullying days, thanks to tools made available to them on the Non au harcèlement website. With the ambassadors of the Jean-Monnet's college and Vaucanson's high school, we, Animation Formation and Free Education (AFFE), we make animations for No to Bullying Day with Stop au Harcèlement and Planning Familial. We take this opportunity to take note of the evolution of harassment and cyber-harassment situations in school field as planned by PHARE's program. For debate, we usually use the tool named: quizzes, TableTop Role-Playing Game (TTRPG or TRPG) and forum theatre.

-The first advantage of quizzes is that they don't require much preparation. The second is that they are reusable which isn't the case for the scene of a forum theatre. For atmosphere, we are inspired by many quizzes found on TV game shows like "Big Brother", "Quite Interesting". In this case, the competition encourages the creativity and puts some fun into serious topics. It isn't an end in itself but it stimulates the debate which follows. The questions must be crystal clear, well-understood and short so that the answers are also clear. The debate after quizzes is classical and in small groups. After the quizzes and small groups debates, each reporter from each of small groups states the main ideas that came out of discussion. In the end of session, we, as animators, we make a general conclusion for everybody without forgetting to reming the useful gouvernment contacts and the laws which are related to it.

-The TableTop Role-Playing Game (TTRPG or TRPG) is a classification of Role-Playing Game (RPG). It's a game in which players assume the role of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsability for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making regarding character development. Actions taken within many games succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. The TableTop Role-Playing Game is conducted throught discussion in a small social gathering by a narrator gamemaster. We apply TTRPG to bullying/harassment situations and sexual agressions (pedophilia, abuse, intra-familial violence, rape, incest). It's a different format than forum theatre which more appropriate for people who are shy or afraid of public speaking.

-The forum theatre is an interactive show which, by the theatre game, allows for reflection and debate around a chosen theme. By this tool, we can talk about many topics as the harassment, discrimination, sexual consent, or  the women rights. First, the played scenes are created with fictive characters but also with real daily problematic situations. Its can be rehearsed or improvised. We have a game master which chooses as many actors - professionnals or hobbyists - as the stage requires. They play the situation scene on stage. Then, he/she asks the audience to think about a way out of a problematic situation in relation to what has just been played. Often, there are several good answers and the choice to adopt one will depend on the person's character and its sense of danger. In conclusion, after numerous of moved debates, the situation scene is played with one of good issues by the actors of a day among the audience.
